Microsoft kills off Windows Mobile 6 market

Microsoft is shutting down the market for Windows Mobile 6, warning the few remaining users to update their apps while they still can.
Windows Mobile 6.x was Microsoft's predecessor to Windows Phone, which replaced it 18 months ago. Its Marketplace will be shut down from 9 May, with no more updates or downloads available.
Apps installed on phones will of course continue to work, but Microsoft warned users not to wipe handsets, as it won't be possible to redownload any data or software.
"All phone data, including applications acquired through the Windows Mobile 6.x Marketplace service, data and user-specific settings, will be deleted from your Windows Mobile 6.x phone in the event that your phone is wiped or 'hard reset'," the company said. "Any data on a removable storage card, if present, will also be deleted if your phone is wiped or 'hard reset'."
Apps and updates might still be available directly from developers or third-party app stores, Microsoft noted.
If that wasn't enough of a push to upgrade to a more modern handset, Microsoft ended its message with: "Thank you for your continued support of Windows Phone."
