Ads in Gmail and your personal data

Apple Conference Date Suggests iPhone 5 Release Date

A new report by Japanese Mac blog Macotakra has indicated that Apple is behind schedule on ordering parts for the next-generation iPhone. That could very well mean that instead of a summer release — as has been Apple’s tradition — the so-called iPhone 5 may not debut until the fall.
AppleInsider has suggested that Apple’s delay in ordering parts could mean that we won’t see a new iPhone during Apple’s fiscal year 2011, which ends on September 24. Apple will instead, the report surmises, focus on releasing the phone during the first half of fiscal year 2012 — and almost certainly in time for the 2011 holiday season.
Macotakra also went on to suggest that, although Apple has considered adopting an aluminum body for the iPhone 5, it has yet to commit to the new design. Rumors began circulating earlier this month that Apple was considering dropping the glass back  found on the iPhone 4 in favor of a aluminum design.
Earlier today, Apple announced that its 2011 World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) would commence on June 6. Apple promised to unveil “the future of iOS and Mac OS,” but didn’t allude to any new hardware announcements. Apple has in the past used its annual WWDC to announce the next-generation of iPhone.

MySQL.com hacked via SQL injection

Hackers over the weekend compromised Oracle's MySQL.com customer website via SQL injection and posted a list of usernames and passwords online.
Two Romanian hackers using the aliases “TinKode” and “NeOh” have taken responsibility for the attack and said they exploited an SQL injection flaw to break into the web servers hosting MySQL.com, a website for the popular open source database product.
The site was first outed as vulnerable in a Sunday post to the Full Disclosure mailing list by a user with the alias “Jackh4xor,” who included a list of MySQL.com internal databases and tables along with usernames and password hashes.
Later on Sunday, TinKode and NeOh posted a dump of information extracted from MySQL, including the cracked passwords of users, to the text-sharing site Pastebin.
In an accompanying blog post, TinKode said he and NeOh had discovered the vulnerability in January. Their information dump included account credentials for two former MySQL employees – former Director of Product Management Robin Schumacher, whose password was a four-digit number, and former Vice President of Community Relations Kaj Arnö.
The hackers also on Sunday admitted to attacking Oracle's Sun Microsystems website, Sun.com, via SQL injection. They posted tables and email addresses, but no passwords, extracted from Sun.com.
Oracle obtained both affected domains, Sun.com and MySQL.com, with its acquisition of Sun.
“It does not appear to be a vulnerability in the MySQL software, but rather flaws in the implementation of their websites,” Chester Wisniewski, senior security adviser at anti-virus firm Sophos, wrote in a blog post Monday. “Auditing your websites for SQL injection is an essential practice, as well as using secure passwords.”
An Oracle spokeswoman told SCMagazineUS.com in an email Monday that the company is investigating the incident to determine which systems and data are affected.
Researchers, meanwhile, are advising MySQL users to exercise caution in light of the incident.
“If you have an account on MySQL.com, we recommend changing your passwords ASAP (especially if you like to reuse them across multiple sites),” David Dede, lead security researcher at Sucuri Security, a malware detection solutions provider, wrote in a blog post Sunday.

Microsoft: Mystery bug blocks Syrian secure Hotmail

Microsoft is blaming a mystery bug for preventing access to the encrypted version of Hotmail, denying that it deliberately blocked access to the service in Syria.

On Friday afternoon, the company told The Reg that Hotmail users who had already enabled the HTTPS version of the popular email service were still able to use it. Only Hotmailers trying to turn on HTTPS for the first time in certain countries and languages were being blocked, Microsoft said.

People trying to connect were greeted with the message: "Your Windows Live ID can't use HTTPS automatically because this feature is not available for your account type."

Microsoft said it still doesn't know what caused the bug, but it has been resolved and the company is investigating the cause. "We do not intentionally limit support by region or geography and this issue was not restricted to any specific region of the world. We apologize for any inconvenience to our customers that this may have caused," a Microsoft spokesperson said.

The company said users in the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, and Fiji were also affected.

Microsoft made HTTPS available for Hotmail inbox, calendar, and contacts in November of last year.

The issue was first flagged by a Syrian user who posted a screen grab to TwitPic here. That sparked concern across the Tweet-o-sphere that Microsoft had blocked HTTPS in some countries or regions.

The user is a computer engineering student apparently based at the University of Jordan, in Amman. On Friday, Security forces in Syria reportedly shot and killed protesters in the cities of Dara'a and Sanamein who had been demanding freedom, food, and jobs. There were protests in the capital Damascus too, as part of a nationwide call for change called "day of dignity".

Security and privacy researcher Christopher Soghoian suggested HTTPS was being blocked not just in Syria, but in Egypt too. Soghoian, graduate fellow at the Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research in Washington DC, said on Twitter that he'd set his Hotmail country to Egypt by default and that HTTPS had been prohibited. He then set his country to Israel and HTTPS by default was allowed. He tweeted: "Hotmail HTTPS feature seems to depend on country set in preferences... not the IP you are connecting from."

Microsoft introduced HTTPS in Hotmail to protect users log-ins, emails and other information from hackers and other unwanted scrutiny. Also, in November, SkyDrive, Photos, Docs, and Devices pages all started to use SSL encryption.

HTTPS was not extended to Outlook Hotmail Connector, Windows Live Mail, and Windows Live for Windows Mobile 6.5 - and older - and Symbian phones.

Yahoo Search Direct Takes On Google Instant

Yahoo today unveiled Yahoo Search Direct, a new feature similar to Google Instant that shows search results as you type. The benefit to you: Less typing, fewer clicks, and (hopefully) faster results.
Search Direct starts working as soon as you click inside the query window. A dropdown box displays the latest trending searches before you've typed a single character.
A larger window to the right of the trending list displays relevant information as you type. Enter "cameras," for instance, and Search Direct displays camera pricing information for Yahoo Shopping:
The benefit to you, gentle searcher, is that Yahoo provides relevant information before you've left the search box. You may very well be directed to Yahoo's in-house content (as the above camera example shows), but that shouldn't come as a surprise. And, of course, you can proceed to a traditional search results page--the usual list of blue links--simply by tapping the Enter key.
Is Yahoo Search Direct better than Google Instant? This depends on what type of information you're seeking. NCAA hoops fanatics who type "march madness" in Yahoo Search Direct will see this:
By comparison, Google Instant users entering the same query will see this (partial results page shown):
Let's do a weather example. Here's what you'll see when you type "91301 weather" in Yahoo Search Direct:
And the same query in Google Instant:
Yahoo Search Direct is a public beta in the U.S. today, and will expand to other Yahoo products and markets later this year, the company says.
So who's got the best instant karma, Yahoo or Google?
