Apple's iPad announcement: live

Apple is unveiling the next-gen iPad, and we'll have all the news from the UK press conference.
As usual, rumour and speculation abounds: reports suggest it will be called the iPad HD, not the iPad 3, and will feature a Retina display, support 4G, and drop the "home" button. We don't have much longer to wait to find out if any of those rumours are true.
Updates will appear here from 6pm. The page will update automatically, so there's no need to hit refresh.
  • Apple isn't killing the iPad 2 - it will drop in price by $10o. The 16GB Wi-Fi version will cost $399.
  • Rehashing the new specs and features. Name must be coming soon..
  • iPhoto will be $4.99. Available today.
  • Slick-looking photo editing tool auto-corrects the horizon, and it will seek out similar photos for you.
  • iPhoto for iPad supports up to 19-megapixel photos.
  • Demo photos are lovely shots from Antarctica. Baby seals are adorable on a Retina display.
  • That features multitouch editing, professional effects, brushes, and photo beaming - letting you send between devices.
  • And now iPhoto for iPad.
  • That's also a free update, which is nice.
  • And, on to iMovie, improving storyboards, themes and graphics.
  • Garage Band has been updated too, allowing up to four iPads to be linked for shared recording.
  • iWork being updated for the Retina display. It'll be a free update, and same price as before.
  • Game demo. Here's a game: guess the name of the New iPad.
  • Autodesk has a drawing app. It looks nice on the nicer screen. Noticing a trend?
  • Demoing games and apps now. Breaking news: they look better on a better display.
  • Apps will scale up automatically, as they did for the iPhone, Apple says, so the Retina display won't be a burden on developers.
  • Preorders start today, including in the UK; available 16 March.
  • Same prices as last one. Wi-Fi is $599/32GB and $699/64GB. 4G is $629/$729/$829.
  • $499.
  • Weighs in at 1.4lbs, and 9.4mm. (We'll translate that weight to British as soon as we get a chance.)
  • It offers ten hours of battery life on Wi-Fi, and nine on 4G.
  • New iPad - which is what we hope it's name turns out to be - will be able to be used as a personal hotspot, assuming the mobile operator allows it.
  • New iPad gets 4G. It will feature HSPA+ (21Mbits/sec) and dual-carrier HSDPA (up to 42Mbits/sec) and LTE support.
iPad launch
  • Dictate emails rather than typing.
  • Another new feature: voice dictation. Siri is surely next?
  • 1080p video recording, with stabilisation software and noise reduction.
  • Next up: the iSight camera. That's a 5-megapixel camera, with five element lens.
  • Apple claims the A5X is four times faster than the Tegra 3.
  • The processor is an A5X, with quad-core graphics.
  • That's 3.1 million pixels - more than an HD TV.
  • The 9.7in display is 2,048 x 1,536.
iPad 3

  • It'll feature a Retina display, and despite rumours, it will still have a home button.
  • And here's the new iPad. But what's it called?
  • Taking a dig at Twitter app running on Galaxy Tab, saying it's an app designed for a smartphone, not a tablet.
  • There are more than 200,000 apps designed specifically for the iPad.
  • Tim Cook revealing results of a survey, which unsurprisingly found that people love their iPads.
  • 15m sold last quarter, which is more sales than any PC maker had, he says.
  • And on to the iPad. Cook is mercifully quick.
  • Price is $99. Available next week, with preorders today.
  • Pulls in iTunes playlists via iCloud. Supports NetFlix and can download films from your iCloud account.
  • Demoing the new interface.
  • ...which is handy for the new Apple TV, which also supports 1080p.
  • Apple's iCloud now supports movies, in 1080p.
  • 25billionth app was downloaded in China. They don't just make the products, they use them, too.
  • Japan is getting Siri. But when will Apple create one that can understand the Scottish, eh?
  • Cook is talking about Siri now. In case you've forgotten, that's the voice-activated assistant Apple unveiled six months ago.
  • Apple's sold 315m iOS devices so far.
  • Apple apparently has a new store in Amsterdam. Exciting times.
  • Those made up 76% of Apple's revenue.
  • Cook points out that Apple sold 172m iPods, iPads and iPhones last year. That's a few.
  • Tim Cook is on stage. He's already used the phrase "post-PC".
  • We're waiting for the show to start... and to find out if any of the rumoured specs are true. Who knows, Apple could surprise and launch a revamped iPod instead. (We don't actually think that will happen.)
