Google pulls plug on Health and PowerMeter projects

Google is shutting down two experimental projects – Google Health and Google PowerMeter.
Google Health, a plan to make health-care records more easily available, is to shut down on 1 January, with Google blaming the closure on a lack of adoption among patients and health professionals.
“Google Health is not having the broad impact that we hoped it would,” the company wrote in a blog post.
We haven’t found a way to translate that limited usage into widespread adoption
“There has been adoption among certain groups of users like tech-savvy patients and their caregivers, and more recently fitness and wellness enthusiasts, but we haven’t found a way to translate that limited usage into widespread adoption in the daily health routines of millions of people.”
The company advised Health users to download their records before the beginning of 2013, when all Health files will be deleted.
The demise of PowerMeter – a tool designed to help people measure their energy use - is scheduled for 16 September.
“We’re pleased that PowerMeter has helped demonstrate the importance of this access and created something of a model,” Google said. “However, our efforts have not scaled as quickly as we would like, so we are retiring the service.”
